Wayne County U.S. History & Geography Project

Welcome to the MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION – TITLE II (A3), Wayne County U.S. History & Geography Project: Building Competence in U.S. History through the use of Geographic Information Systems technology.

Abstract
The Wayne County U.S. History & Geography Project is a joint effort among several collaborators. These include :Eastern Michigan University's College of Arts and Sciences and College of Education; the Wayne County Regional Education Service Agency; Central Michigan University's Michigan Geographic Alliance, and three high needs K-12 districts in Wayne County; Ecorse, Redford Union and the River Rouge School Districts.

The goal of this teacher professional development project is to help middle school and high school social studies educators and special education teachers implement grade-level content expectations for U.S. history and geography by utilizing the power of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology for data mapping and visualization capabilities to enhance the teaching and learning of temporal (time) and spatial (space) concepts.

This project utilizes ArcGIS Online as a GIS tool to reinforce the teaching and learning of grade-level content expectations related to U.S. History Eras 6 through 9. The project will provide ninety hours of professional development instruction to 21 teachers who teach 8th grade Integrated U.S. History and Geography and high school U.S. History and Geography. Curricular materials and workshops sessions address content related to U.S. History Eras 6 through 9. The project will also incorporate Universal Design for Learning Principles, scaffolding, project based learning, and multicultural design practices.
